What to Expect - The Plan and Route
We will meet in the Park and Ride car park in Nant Peris, and take the Snowdon Sherpa Bus to nearby Pen-y-Pass.
At Pen-y-Pass, we'll be surrounded by towering mountains on all sides.
We'll head off on a track towards Snowdon, taking a fork towards the Pyg Track. The path is well-defined and climbs slowly at first, getting steeper as we go on.
We reach a fork in the path. The point of committment. This is where we will reflect on choosing the path of least resistence in life or dare to take on a bolder path.
We'll take on the bolder path to the right.
The path winds up the mountain of Crib Goch in front of us. As it steepens, we start to use our hands on the rock, until we are faced with a tricky tower of rock in front of us, with no end in sight. Staying in the centre, there are about half a dozen climbing steps here, but holds are plentiful and we'll soon see that the top isn't far.
After this, we carry on following the path until we reach a small summit that drops down onto a small flat area that marks the start of the ridge.
The challenge will be laid before us, and we will steel ourselves before setting out onto the main ridge. Although the ridge is airy, with a very steep drop on the right-hand side, the slope to the left is far less precarious, and you'll find it possible to drop down to this side slightly, using the crest of the ridge as a handrail.
At the end of the ridge, we have three pinnacles to navigate, before ending up on flat ground once again!
From here, the scrambling continues (less intensely!) to Garnedd Ugain, before we reach the Snowdon plateau. After a short walk, we'll reach the summit.
To descend, we initially follow the Watkin Path, but soon leave it for a final scramle of the day up Y Liwedd. If the weather is clear, we'll be looking straight back across at Crib Goch, and revel in the achievement of completing it!
Finally, we desend back to Llyn Llydaw, and back to Pen-y-Pass.
We'll return on the Sherpa Bus to Llanberis for a well-deserved meal and drink (food and drink not included!)
