The Question Everyone is Trying to Answer

Is a new year the start of a great adventure, or are you looking for a year of consolidation?

It's not a trick question - there is no wrong answer.

Nearly every person I have ever worked with in every session, is fundamentally working with this question.

🏔️ Are you seeking more ADVENTURE?
Or
🧷 Are you seeking more SAFETY?

We live our lives in a dance between these two conflicting priorities.

EVERYONE needs adventure. We are excited by the new and unknown, and our minds feast on uncertainty.

It feeds our curiosity and absolutely SUPERCHARGES our creativity. It helps us to see new possibilities and enables us to grow. It's why we explore, it's why we learn, it's why we push and challenge ourselves.

EVERYONE needs safety. We need certainty about where our next meal is coming from, that we have an environment in which we can sleep and relax, without worrying about being attacked.

We need to know that there are constants in life we can rely on, people we can trust. It lowers our anxiety and stress, and allows us to function in our lives.

And we all have an internal preference for one over the other, on a scale between the ultra-risk takers and ultra-play-it-safers. When we feel balance between these two priorities, we know we are on the right path.

This preference, this balance is like a beacon💡- something that shines constant and bright, and reminds us when we veer off.

Like when we over-reach, risk too much, and need more safety.

Or, when we play it too safe, go through the motions and get bored.

It doesn't really matter where you are on the scale, what matters is where you are now in relation to your beacon.

You might not like change, yet yearn for something new 🏔️

Or you may be an adventurer who is feeling burnt out 🛏️

So… Is a new year the start of a great adventure, or are you looking for more of the same?
